5 Homemade Cures For Common Cold & Cough

Feed by sandy Cat- Health & Beauty

The common cold strikes fast and it strikes often. Most of us just tackle the symptoms - coughing, fever, phlegm, body pain and sneezing - with an array of pills, an army of tissues and a whole lot of willpower. However, here are 5 simple and soothing home remedies for cough and cold.

Picture this scenario - you've woken up on a Monday to discover that the overnight feeling of a ticklish nose and body pain has morphed into a big cold. Immediately, you rush to the pharmacy for cough syrup, a tablet for your fever, a nasal spray for your nose. But what if you didn't need to step out of the house to cure your cold?

Instead, try these five soothing and effective home remedies for cough and cold.

1. The Citrus and Honey Potion:

One of the most powerful (and honestly, delicious) ways to stop a cold in its tracks is to sip on a concoction of lemon and honey. Mix the juice of 1/2 a lemon with a few tablespoons of fresh honey, (you can add a pinch of cinnamon powder) and just sip this throughout the day. Fresh lemon juice is rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants that boost your immune system and speed up the healing. Honey helps in killing bacteria. It is also the one of the best home remedies for sore throat.

2. Do the Salt-Water Gargle:

An age-old, tried and tested formula, the salt-water gargle is simple and effective. Take a cup of warm water and mix a pinch of salt into it. Gargle small mouthfuls in your throat before spitting it out. The saline solution moistens your dry throat, brings relief and is one of the most effective home remedies for cough. Follow this regimen four times a day and feel the change.

3. Water, Water, Everywhere:

Hydration is key! Drinking warm fluids will break the congestion of phlegm, prevents dehydration, reduces the inflammation of your throat and washes out the infection! Warm soup and fresh fruit juices also help restore the energy you lost from fighting the infection.

4. The Steam Engine:

Is your nose stuffy from phlegm? Just heat water, until it is steaming, in a wide bowl. Stand over the bowl and breathe in the steam deeply for 10 to 15 minutes at a stretch. You can add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a soothing effect. Be careful though, the water is hot!

5. Old Is Gold:

It's one of those cures, tucked away in the corners of your grandmother’s mind, but this golden hued mix of milk and turmeric is one of the most helpful home remedies for cold. Turmeric is rich in antiseptics and milk is rich in calcium. Drinking it provides instant relief from a runny nose and a sore throat. It's definitely worth it!

So sit back and relax. You don't need to rush to your pharmacist immediately. All you need is rest, some simple home remedies and basic medication, to beat that common cold!
