How your Appearance in UPSC interview

The proper appearance for the Personality Test is indeed a very aspect of your overall preparation. This is so because your appearance is an important ingredient that makes your overall personality. It becomes all the more important because it is the paramount factor in providing your first impression to the board and as it is said aptly that “the first impression is the last impression”, this signifies the importance of the proper appearance. Experts opine that if all other factors are equal a well groomed person is always at a better position.

Very often it is seen that the candidates make a mistake that they are only concerned about their dress. Dear friends, the appearance is not synonymous with dress only, though dress is the most important aspect of the appearance. Your appearance will comprise of the following factors.

  • Hair style and hair cut
  • Shave
  • Facial makeup
  • The dress
  • The footwear
  • Any ornaments or jewelry

The hair style and the haircut:         

There is no standard that what kind of hairstyle  should one have; but based on the conventions and through plain common sense you know that what should be the hair style a prospective bureaucrat should don. So you should have a decent hair style which should match to your job profile. Simultaneously the hair style needs to be in a proper shape, that is, a proper haircut has to be there. The hair should not be excessively oiled.

Before you enter the interview hall please ensure that your hairs are properly combed. It is desirable to keep a small comb with you.

Shave:

The mal Aspirant Officers should have a proper shave. Those who keep a beard, 1t should be smartly maintained.

Facial makeup:

Generally the makeup should be avoided but if due to any reason you are going for it, ensure that it is a light makeup and should suit to the occasion.

If you wear spectacles try avoiding the ones with photo chromatic lens. Don't commit the blunder of entering into the interview room with the goggles.

The dress:

The kind of dress one wears is indicative, to some extent, of the thought process of the person. Hence you should be very particular about your attire for the day.

Now there is a lot of confusion as to what constitutes the proper attire. What is the right dress for the occasion? I would say that there is no one particular attire which can be termed as the most apt attire but definitely we can come to the conclusion as to what are the possible attires that can be worn by the men and the ladies on the day. Choosing the right attire depends upon various factors like

  • The comfort,
  • The weather,
  • The occasion,
  • The cost,
  • Social, economic and cultural perspective.

Some general guidelines for choosing the right dress:

  • You should be physically and mentally comfortable in the dress.
  • The dress should instill confidence in you.
  • Avoid newly stitched clothes because you might feel uncomfortable in them in the beginning.
  • Don't wear very costly clothes.
  • The overall fitting should be moderate: it should neither be too tight nor too loose.
  • The dress should not be over sized.
  • It should be neat and well ironed.
  • There should be no spots on the dress.
  • The dress should be comfortable and should appear decent
  • It should be appropriate for the occasion.
  • The dress should not be outdated. That does not mean that it should be very fashionable.
  • Your attire should be absolutely formal. Don't wear casual clothes, especially t-shirts and jeans .
  • Don't carry unnecessary items in your pocket as they will make your pockets bulge which reduces the class of your dress and can also make you feel uneasy.
  • If you wear a turban ensure that it is clean, should be tied properly and the color of the turban should match the color of your dress.

The right dress for men:

A light colored full sleeve plain format shirt along with a dark coloured plain formal trouser with black or brown leather shoes along with a simple belt and a sober tie is the recommended dress for the men. The collar and cuffs of the shirt should be clean.

One should avoid multi colored or fancy shirts and informal trousers. T shirts and jeans are strict no. The belts should not be trendy and should not have big bulging buckles. The shoes should also be formal and shoes with hard soles should be avoided. Needless to say that the dress should be properly ironed, should be spot free and you should be comfortable in it. A mild deodorant ff required can be applied.

The right dress for the ladies:

Light colored well ironed cotton saree is the most dignified attire for the ladies. If for any reason, one is not comfortable in a saree she can also wear a light colored salwar suitbut it should not have large designs or very catchy colors on it. The footwear should not have long heels and should not make noise. The nails should be trimmed and nail polish should be avoided. The married ladies can wear the mangalsutra, bindi, sindhoor and the wedding ring. A mild perfume, if desired, can be applied. The western attire should be avoided.

Footwear:

You should pay equal attention to your footwear. They should be clean and well polished. Try not to wear a new pair of footwear as they might be uncomfortable. The footwear, for both the men and the ladies, should be well polished, should have small heels, and should have soft soles so that it should not make the tapping noise while walking.

Jewelry:

Any kind of jewelry should be avoided.
