Within few days from the announcement of the results of the Mains examination, the UPSC comes out with a list of the first round of the candidates who are to be interviewed. The interviews are conducted in two sessions: forenoon and afternoon.
Always try to have a light meal (breakfast or the lunch as the case may be) before your Personality Test but do have something. Going empty stomach or with a heavy stomach, both are not desirable.
On the designated day the Aspirant Officer is supposed to reach the UPSC at the start of their respective sessions. You should always try to reach the venue at least half an hour before the scheduled time. Here I would advise you to take a taxi or an auto to reach the venue and this should preferably be pre-booked. Also, to the extent possible, you should have a backup plan as well. You should try to avoid the public transport particularly the buses. Not only it can give you an unnecessary stress at that point but can also result in certain other unwanted incidents like spoiling of your dress.
After reaching the venue and going through the security checking, the candidates are made to sit in a waiting hall. There are tables, in the hall, having the capacity of 4 to 5 candidates. Each tables attended by an attendant who does all the work relating to the scrutinisation of the documents. The environment in the waiting hall is quite comfortable and supportive, where the candidates can have interactions, discussions and chats about various topics. They are provided with the newspapers of the day and are served with tea and biscuits.
Thereafter the candidates are informed about their respective Boards. Generally about 6 to 8 Boards conduct the interviews simultaneously. Each Board is headed by a chairperson who is the member of the UPSC. (Remember that the chairperson of the UPSC doesn't head any board) Apart from the chairperson, every Board comprises of 4 other members who are not the members of the UPSC but are the eminent personalities of their respective fields. Usually 5 to 6 candidates are interviewed by a single Board in one session. After the formalities related to the scrutinization of the documents are over, the peon comes to the hall and starts naming the candidates one by one and in that order they start going for their respective interview Boards. The process continues like this till the last candidate.
Don't be overly worried about the interview Board that you will get. Frankly speaking, I do admit that there is at least some degree of difference between the way the various Boards award you score you but I will also admit, quite frankly, that none of the Board is an 'anti-candidate Board'. Hence you should forget the thing about which you cannot do anything. Just have the belief that what GOD ALMIGHTY has decided for you will be the best for you.
Certain important precautions you should take for the D-day:
- Don't forget to take the interview call letter and any other documents asked by the commission
- Try to avoid carrying a mobile phone or do hand it over to a friend.
- You should resist from trying to cram or learn anything new in the waiting hall. You should only have light discussions and chat with the other Aspirant Officers and if you don't want that, simply sit quietly and do some kind of office yoga etc.
- If there's a nature's call do relieve yourself. It's not a good idea to attend the Personality Test with any kind of pressure.
