Agriculture has an important role in our economy. Being the main occupation of the people of India, about four percent of our workforce is employed in agriculture. Both industrial and agricultural are important for the country's progress and since independence, we have made great efforts in the field of industrial development. However, nearly twenty percent of our national income still comes from agriculture. Therefore, its role in our country's economy can not be ignored.

Agriculture provides us with our very basic requirement of food in the form of cereals, vegetables, fruits and many other edibles. Apart from this it provides raw materials for many industries, in this way it not only fulfills one of our essential requirements, but also supports the industries. There are many agricultural products which are exported and in exchange a valuable foreign currency is earned which strengthen our country's economic system. Therefore, it is important to develop and promote the agricultural sector.

After achieving independence, Govardhan has given highest priority to agriculture. Better quality of seeds and chemical fertilizers, methods of irrigation and the use of modern methods of farming and machinery have certainly increased our agricultural production.

Cooperative societies are also very useful in this field for marketing available agricultural produce and easy loan schemes to farmers. As a result of all these efforts, the growth rate during the year 1950-60 was 7.6 percent in 1998-99, which was 7.6 percent. The production of food grains has increased fourfold from fifty million tonnes in 1950-51, which is estimated to be two hundred million tons in 1998-99.

Although our agricultural production has increased a lot, it is still satisfactory. If the farmers produce more and get better prices or their production is a problem of rural backwardness and poverty, which is affecting our country since the British rule is resolved then progress in the shortage of agriculture has slowed down. The prosperity of the farmers means a big market for industrial goods which in turn gives benefits to the industries.

Thus, agriculture is of paramount importance for the progress of the country. This is the real spine of our economy, as with the prosperity of the farmers, the nation is migrant. Therefore, agriculture should be given top priority and the situation of farmers should be improved. Only then can we expect a country financially advanced.
