Essay on The International Space Station (ISS) - 600 Words

International Space Station (ISS) is a research facility that is being assembled in Lo Money Orbit. Construction of the station began in 1998, and was due to complete by 2011.

Operations will continue till 2015. At present, ISS is the largest artificial satellite in Earth's orbit. This is bigger than any previous space station. The ISS program is a joint effort through the European Space Agency by the United States of America (NASA), Russia, Japan, Canada and space agency of ten European countries.

As the space station is in a Low Earth orbit, it is visible to the naked eye. It revolves around an altitude of about 350 km from the surface of the earth, whose average speed is 27,700 kilometers (17,210 miles) per hour and completes 15.7 classes per day.

The first resident crew, Expedition 1, had entered the station on 2 November 2000. Since then, it has been a constant employee. Therefore, there is a permanent human presence in space for the last nine years. At present, the station has the capacity for the crew of three.

It will be staffed by one of the six resident teams, starting with Expedition 20. The current crew is Expedition 18. The station has played host to astronauts from 16 different countries, and it was the destination of six space tourists.

International Space Station is primarily a research laboratory. NASA's space shuttle at the station has an advantage of space shuttle. Since it is a long term platform in the atmosphere of space, it allows long-term studies to be done. In many areas including human research, life science, physical science and earth observation, as well as education and technology demonstrations, the use of science is done on a daily basis.

A research effort is to improve the understanding of long-term space risk on the human body. The effect of near-weightlessness on non-human subjects is also being studied. Other research areas include impact of low gravitational environment on combustion, study of burning efficiency, and the manufacture of sub-products from some materials.

Such studies will improve our understanding of energy production, which will have economic and environmental impact. In the Earth's atmosphere there are plans to use the ISS to examine the aerosols, ozone, water vapor and oxide, as well as cosmic rays, cosmic dust, antimatter and dark matter in the universe.

The ISS also acts as a test site for spacecraft systems required for long-term missions on the Moon and Mars, by which the device can be developed in relatively less secure space in the Earth's orbit. ISS offers many opportunities for educational outreach and international cooperation.

The ISS crew provide educational opportunities for students on the grounds of student participation, NASA Investigative Experiments and ISS engineering activities in classroom editions of student-developed experiments, educational demonstrations and ISS experiments.

The ISS program was made possible due to international cooperation. This is a very important achievement for humankind because it allows 14 countries to live together and work in space. This in turn provides important lessons for future multinational missions.

The recent report of 'Times of India' has pointed to the Cold War - as the situation between Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts. After the ISS operation in 2005 commercial relations became sour. This meant that Moscow had begun billing America to send astronauts to space. Other countries also followed the suit.

Now the situation is such that people living in both countries are not sharing facilities like ration, gym facilities and toilets. But these rules reflect decisions at the political and bureaucratic level rather than the personnel of the space station.
