India, which is also officially called Bharat, is the seventh largest and the second most populous nation. It is bounded by the great Himalayas and other snowy mountains in the noth. The country stretches southwards and the Tropic of Cancer, narrows down and ends into the Indian ocean between the Boy of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. It lies entirely in the northern hemisphere. The main land of India extends between latitudes 80 4’ and 370 6’ north and longitudes 680 7’ and 970 25’ east. It measures about 3214 km from north to south and about 2933 km from east to west. In all, the country covers 32,87,263 square kilometers. India’s land frontier is 15,200 kilometres. It has a coast line of 7,516.6 kilometers comprising of the mainland, Lakshadweep group of islands and Andaman and Nicobar group of islands.
