A short note on the Preamble to the Constitution of India.

Preamble to the constitution normally expresses the political, moral, economic and religious values which the constitution is intended to promote. It does not constitute an integral part of the constitution itself is ambiguous and not clear, interpretation of constitution is based on the spirit of the Preamble.

The Preamble to the constitution of India reads as under:

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, are having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political; LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION. The Preamble to the CONSTITUTION. The Preamble to the Constitution of points out that the Source of authority of the Constitution and therefore that of the state is people of India. Thus, the basic principle of democracy that sovereignty rests with the people is enshrined in the Constitution of India.

With the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution, the concept of secularism, socialism and integrity of the nation in the Preamble has been clearly soelt out.
