How is the President elected?

The President is elected indirectly by on Electoral College consisting of the elected members of both the houses of the Legislative Assemblies of the States (Vidhan Sabhas) in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote. The vote at such election is by secret ballot.

The votes of these electors are to be so regulated that the total voting strength of Parliament is equal to the total voting strength of all state assemblies together and all the states are to be uniformly represented at this election.
