International Co-operative Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of each July. In 2018, International Co-operative Day has been marked on 7th July. The International Cooperative Day celebrates the cooperative movement formed by the International Cooperative Alliance from 1923. Every year, on a special subject, celebrate cooperative days around the world. International Co-operative Day is organized to accept associations and enterprises that help people improve their lives by contributing to the social, economic, cultural and political progress of their community and the nation. Cooperative movements are democratic, locally autonomous, but are internationally integrated, and a form of organization and members help themselves in overcoming poverty, employment opportunities, inequality, and much more. The purpose of this day is to create awareness about co-operative societies and to focus on the goals and objectives of the United Nations and International Co-operative Movement.

History of International Cooperative Day

On December 16, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly was declared the International Cooperative Day in Resolution 47/90, to commemorate the International Day of Cooperation Day on the first Saturday of July 1995. It marked the hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance. Since 1995, this day is celebrated internationally. The first records of co-operative societies have been marked by Fenwick, Scotland on March 14, 1761. In 1844, 28 artisans worked in a cotton mill in Rochedale, England, the first modern cooperative business, founded the Rochedale Equitable Pioneers Society. To tackle food shortage, working conditions, low wages, they decided to work together to pool their resources and get basic goods at a lower cost. Rochdale pioneers are considered the prototype of the modern cooperative and the founders of the cooperative movement. Now, it is believed that there are 1 billion members in this area.

How International Co-operative Day is celebrated

Every year international cooperative days are celebrated with different themes. For the year 2018, the theme has been set as "permanent consumption and production of goods and services". Co-operation will show people how to successfully run a business by keeping the natural environment and resources safe. Events will be revealed by the President of International Cooperative Alliance in the event of co-operatives. People around the world will celebrate different days. Articles and radio programs will be organized to spread awareness about the day. Fairs, exhibitions, campaigns will also be organized on the theme of the day.
