Lohgarh fort is one of the many hilly kilos of Maharashtra. This mountainous area is near Lonavala and 52 km away in the northern part of Pune. The fortress of Lohgarh is situated at an altitude of about 1033 m (3389 ft) above sea level.

This fort is connected to its neighboring Visapur fort. Most of the time this fort remained near the Maratha empire, but only for 5 years this fort remained near the Mughals.

The history of Lohgarh is very deep, different empires ruled it at different times. Mainly included Satvahan, Rashtrakut, Yadav, Chalukyya, Nizam, Bahmins, Mughals and Maratha.

Shivaji Maharaj captured it in 1648 CE, but due to the Treaty of Purandar in 1665 CE Shivaji Maharaj had to entrust this fort to the Mughal Empire. In 1670 CE, Shivaji Maharaj had re-entered this fort in the Maratha Empire and used this fort to keep his treasure.

This fort was also used in the Maratha empire to keep the spoiled goods. Later, in the time of Peshwa, Nana Fadnavis used it for some time and used to construct huge tanks and stairs inside the fort.

Currently the Indian government is protecting this fort.
