Background-: Naseeruddin Shah was born in Uttar Pradesh Jahiruddin Shah, his elder brother, was born in Barabanki district, is Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

Studies-: His schooling was from St. Anselm Ajmer and St. John's College, Nainital. He graduated from the Aligarh Muslim University in Arts and went to the National School of Drama, Delhi.
