To tackle the problem of illiteracy in the country, the Government of India has taken several initiatives. In a judgment in 1993, the Supreme Court had said that children have the right to free education and thus in 2003, the Right to Education was included in the Constitution by the 83rd Amendment Act. Several other schemes have also been started to ensure the right to education in the country.

  • National Policy for Education, 1986 declared that the entire country should be committed to reducing itself to the illiteracy, especially among the young population.
  • Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, 2001, was started to ensure that all children in the age group of 6-14 years participate in school and complete eight years of schooling till 2010.
  • Mid Day Meal Scheme for improving the nutritional status of school-age children across the country.
  • National Secondary Education Campaign, 200 9, to increase access to secondary education and to improve its quality.
