Since, tackling water resources has been one of the primary goals, due to which multi-purpose river valley projects are getting importance. The purpose of these projects is to meet the need of preparation of irrigation, flood control and hydro power through navigation.

Such projects include wildlife programs on waste land and wasteland which prevent erosion of soil and protect the water obtained from rain and flowing rivers in the area. Fishery has been developed in the reservoirs. Large canals are often used for navigation and water is distributed to nearby rural settlements and urban centers.

These projects encourage the development of industries in the surrounding area, hence a multi-purpose project can develop development in the vicinity. Our country is blessed with many rivers and other water bodies, which makes it the home of many river valley projects, some of which are listed below.

Advantages of river valley projects

Multipurpose river valley projects have proved to be beneficial for all of us.

  • These man-made dams collect large amount of rain water. They also help in the investigation of floods and the protection of the soil. This stored water is very useful in irrigation fields, when the demand for weather is very large, during the season
  • The catchment areas of these dams are now fully grown. It helps in conservation of natural ecosystems and helps in the conservation of flora and fauna, afforestation also helps to avoid being surrounded by dams, river faucets and irrigation canals. It helps in lifting their life and economic viability
  • Water kept or covered in mountainous areas is usually high head, dam water, when it falls from high altitude, also helps in the power of electricity in dry weather. Power is known as hydal power or hydro-electricity by running or falling water. It is one of clean, fresh and non polluting forms of energy
  • Multipurpose river valley projects often for central water and navigation by rivers and canals. This is the cheapest way to transport 0% for heavy goods.

Disadvantages to river valley projects

There are some issues related to multi-purpose river valley projects

  • These projects usually remove many people from very fertile land, thereby reducing the productivity of these people. They take away their livelihoods and their homes, the community along the river has flooded the flood and they have to move. Beautiful areas, gardens and forests can be lost.
  • In addition to humans, fish have lost their natural habitat. Migratory fishes are destroyed because they cannot navigate behind the dam.
  • Water still gets warmer than water and it can increase unwanted vegetation (algae, moss, weeds) and unhealthy bacteria.
  • The inter-state water disputes are also carried out in connection with the sharing of cost and benefits of projects. Dharams have started flooding due to sedimentation in the catchment area. Some floods have not affected the flood during excessive dams.

Most of India's rivers suffer from interstate disputes. Water dispute is a term that describes the conflict between countries, states, or groups in relation to access to water resources. This water arises due to the interests of the users, public or private opposition

Due to the absence of a clear idea from the Center on water politics in our country, mainly water disputes have arisen. Interstate water sharing works are not within the rivers for water sharing, construction of dams and other structures.

Most rivers in India are facing inter-state water disputes. Water disputed with some debates, there is a Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka; Krishna water dispute between Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh; Tungabhadra water dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka; Mahi river dispute etc. between Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh The above mentioned disputes are from many people. With the help of Central Government, several attempts have been made to resolve the disputes through dialogue between Basin states.

Therefore, river valley projects can be said to be a major step in the direction of development along with state for various beneficial purposes at the central level. It not only tackles problems like irrigation, drought, agricultural production, employment etc. But the disputes are resolved in an amicable way, but also resolves and strengthen inter-state relations.
