In this article cover Topic : What  is an old age home?, The concept is a new one in India, Reasons for the mushrooming of old age home, Several advantages of old age home and The government and non-governmental organization should take important steps.

An old age home is usually the place, a shelter for those old people who have no one to look after them or those who have been thrown out of their homes by their children.

An old age home is a place where old people (60 years above) can live together and away from their own family members. Old age home staff is supposed to take care of them when they are very weak or ill to take care of themselves. In these homes, the inmates get all the facilities for a routine living like food, clothing and shelter. Growing old is the process of life and everyone has to face this period.

Every person on the earth has a dream of living a decent long life. With advancement in the field of medical sciences average lifespan of people has risen to 65 to 70 years. But beyond 70 old age acquires a critical preposition where man faces problems physically, mentally, socially and even economically. Then, they become more or less dependent upon their children.

The very concept of an old age home is new to India. Earlier, the elderly persons of a family were respected and were taken care of by their children and grand children. But now a change can be seen. Many a times children refuse to share the burden of looking after the elderly as they are very busy and do not have time even for their own children.

Growing urbanization and fast moving modern life are the biggest contributor to this problem. Further, erosion of moral values has also ignited this problem. With the breakup of joint family system problem of looking after the elderly has become a matter of concern where both husband and wife are working, they find it more convenient to keep their elderly parents in old age home.

They need all the freedom to socialise and enjoy the life forgetting that  Their parents were there when they were small and sorted out all their Problem, right from the time they were born.

Though, it sounds unbelievable but it is true that there are children who leave their old parents as destitutes to die. This has added to the mushrooming of old age homes in India.

There are several advantages also of staying in old age homes for the aged population. Sometimes, both husband and wife opt willingly to live in old age homes due to some specific advantages which are provided at these places (privately run old age homes). These advantages are overall safety, companionship with other members, regular health-check up, being active due to different tasks, different entertainment activities like yoga, sports and hobby classes, special programme for earning etc.

So in today's fast moving world, old age homes should not be looked down upon totally. They can be a secure place for the parents of those children who are working out of India or in some other distant city where they cannot visit or look after their parents regularly of course choice should be left to the parents.

When till date, parents do not find a better option to put their children creches when they go out for work then why the children do not think of putting their parents in old age homes? The government and the Non-governmental organisations should think seriously about this problem .

This problem can also be solved to some extent if the elderly also give it serious thought. They should prepare for their old age gracefully and should secure their old age economically. They should save enough money for themselves so that they do not have to depend for each and everything on their children. Economic security will also enhance their decision making power in the family.

“Old people are like old trees which will not give us fruit but shade which are their blessings ".
