The African continent boasts of rich natural and human resources. It has an unexplored and untapped market for the same. This is why it is termed as the 'Continent of Hope'.

The optimism about African land needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as there are a number of unresolved issues such as poverty, rapid urbanisation, regional integration. gender inequality, food security violent conflict, political fragmentation The weight of its past is a major handicap to the growth of Africa The after-effects of the slave trade, colonisation, and neo-colonialism can be still felt across the continent. These have led to the violation of human rights, suppression of freedom and dignity of the people of the continent. The practice of private corporation illegally grabbing the land, forcing the poor into even more tightly packed slums, over-exploitation of natural and intellectual resources have contributed their share in hampering Africa's development

Africa is considered as one of the most vulnerable continents to the climate change. It faces a threat from extreme events such as storms, floods in the coastal region, sand dune mobilisation and sustained drought. All these have a direct impact on the food and water securiry, health and migration. These climatic shocks can wipe away the GDP of a complete year.

The African middle class is growing at a fast rare. The rate of foreign investments has soared around ten times in the past decade. The entry of non-Western countries Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, and Turkey has improved the infrastructure and boosted Africa's manufacturing sector. The service industries such as telecommunications, retail, transport and tourism are flourishing under the foreign investments. The tariffs restricting the cross border trade have fallen and the trade barriers have been removed.

Investment in some countries have brought about positive changes which points towards the silver lining of hope in near future.

Countries like Rwanda, Liberia, Sierra, Leone, that underwent horrible destruction have decided to engage with the outside world and the private sector to make their em'1ronment hospitable. Rwanda has promise to become the telecommunication and internet hub of East Africa. The African land has openly welcomed the technological revolution in the country. The improved agricultural production ensures food security. The huge reserves of oil promote international trade and help countries to earn foreign exchange. The health of the masses has improved significantly. There has been a decline in deaths due to malaria and HIV infection. The child mortality rate has also seen a steep decline.

At the end of the Cold War, there were only three African countries which were democracies. Since then, the number has risen to almost ten times. The democratic form of government has led to better governance and has improved the socio- economic conditions of the people. Most of the African countries have stopped fighting. The war and civil strife have declined dramancally. Local conflicts do flare up occasionally but they have become less deadly. The hotspots such as Angola, Chad, Eritrea, Liberia and Sierra, Leona are quiet, leaving millions better off and even Congo, Somalia, and Sudan are much less violent that they used to be.

The citizens are engaging with polincs, some in the civil society groups, others in aid efforts or as protestors. Most of the African countries have retreated from the socialist- economic model and have achieved impressive results by taking development into its own hands. The countries such as Nigeria and Kenya have empowered business by removing red tape. Some countries are benefited from the commodity boom driven by increased demand from China.

The government needs to take some strong measures. It needs to make it easier for the natives and citizens to start the business and promote entrepreneurs in the country. The communal ownership of the land should be done away and the title be handed to the individual farmers. This will help the farmers to grow and expand The Western countries, instead of offering aid should promote trade with the Afncan countries. This will give a boost to the domestic markets of Africa and promote the local talent The African government should sign the extractive industries transparency initiative with the foreign countries and global giants. This would provide an opportunity for the government to earn revenues on the license provided to the countries and at the same time explore the untapped resources.
