National Pollution Control Day - 2 December

National Pollution Control Day is celebrated in the memory of those who lost their life in the Bhopal gas tragedy. To honor and remember those dead, India is celebrated every year on December 2. Bhopal gas tragedy was caused by the leakage of other chemicals along with poisonous chemicals known as methyl isocyanate (MIC), from the chemical plant of Union Carbide located in the city on the night of 2nd and 3rd December 1984. According to the report, more than 500,000 people (who died instantly around 2259) died due to the leak of MIC poisonous gas. Later, it was announced by the Madhya Pradesh government that about 3,787 people died due to the gas tragedy. About 8,000-10,000 people died in the next 72 hours, while at least 25,000 people died due to diseases related to gas tragedy. This was known throughout the world as the biggest industrial pollution disaster in the world, for which there is a need for serious preventive measures to stay away from this type of disaster in the future.

National Pollution Control Day will be celebrated on Sunday, December 2, 2018.

Factors for Gas Tragedy

  • MIC storage in large tanks instead of storage in many small drums.
  • Use of more dangerous chemicals (MIC) in place of fewer people
  • Poor conservation of gas after production stopped in the 1980s by the plant.
  • Presence of poor material in pipelines
  • Do not work properly by various security systems.
  • Dependency on hand work at the place of plants for operation, lack of specialist operators and lack of planning of disaster management.

Other tragedies

Other big tragedies in the history of the world are:

  • Three Mile Island tragedy of US nuclear power station in 1979. This was the biggest tragedy in history, which was the nuclear producing station of Three Mile Island (near Harrisonburg) in Dapplin County Pennsylvania.
  • Another major tragedy in history was Chernobyl disaster in 1986 in Ukraine.
  • After the Bhopal gas tragedy in India, other immediate disaster was the leakage of oleum gas in the Shree Ram Food and Fertilizer Limited premises in Delhi.

Why celebrated National pollution control day

One of the main factors to celebrate National Pollution Control Day every year is the prevention of industrial disaster management and control as well as water, air and soil pollution (generated due to industrial processes or manual negligence). Many laws have been announced by the government to seriously control and prevent pollution in the whole world. The National Pollution Control Day is celebrated every year on December 2 to pay attention to the need for pollution control laws, to make people and most industry aware.

What is the prevention process taken by Indian law?

The Indian government has enacted various civil laws and regulations for the control and prevention of pollution in India, some of which are:

  • Water (Prevention and Pollution Control) Act of 1974,
  • Water Cess (Prevention and Pollution Control) Act of 1977,
  • 1981 Air (Prevention and Pollution Control) Act,
  • 1986 Environment (Protection) Rules,
  • 1986 Environment (Protection) Act,
  • The Rule of the Hazardous Chemical Manufacture, Storage and Importance of 1989
  • The Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules of 1989,
  • Dangerous micro-organisms of 1989, the rules for the manufacture, storage, import, export and storage of genetically engineered organisms or cells,
  • 1996's Chemical Accidents (Emergency, Planning, Preparation and Response) Rules,
  • 1998's Biomedical Waste (Management and Conduct) Rules,
  • 1999 recycled plastics construction and use rules
  • Ozone depleting substance (regulation) rule of 2000
  • Rule of 2000 noise pollution (regulation and control)
  • 2000 municipal solid waste (management and operating) rules
  • 2001 Batteries (Management and Operations) Rules.
  • Maharashtra Bio-Garbage (Control) Ordinance 2006
  • Environmental Impact Assessment Notification Rules 2006

National Pollution Control Board

The rules and regulations of all good and bad works are checked by the National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) or Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which is a government body for the prevention of pollution in India. It always checks whether the environmentally friendly technologies are being used properly by all industries or not. Maharashtra has its own control board, which is called the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), it is in the form of an urgent need for pollution control, because it is one of the major states where the rate of industrialization is increasing very rapidly. is. Natural resources such as water, air, land or forest are being affected rapidly by various types of pollution, which are very important in order to be immediately protected by implementing the rules and regulations.

What are the measures of control?

  • Urban Waste Water Treatment and Reuse Project
  • Scientific treatment of solid waste and its management
  • Reduce the production of waste
  • Sewage treatment facility
  • Recycling of waste and energy production from waste.
  • Biomedical waste treatment facility
  • Electronic Waste Treatment Facility
  • Water supply project
  • Resource recovery project
  • Energy saving project
  • Dangerous Waste Management in Urban Areas
  • Projects on Clean Development Mechanism

In order to prevent pollution, proper implementation of rules and all preventive measures of pollution, along with many other efforts have been made by the state government. Industry must first be adhered to all the rules and regulations enforced by the Authority to reduce pollution.
