Nature of The Personality Test of UPSC

The Personality Test conducted by the UPSC is a peculiar type of test having some significant features. Let’s go through them to understand the nature of Personality Test.

  • The nature of the Personality Test is not exactly like the conventional interviews being conducted by the private organizations or other technical institutions. The scope of the former is much wider than that or the latter.
  • It is not like a strict examination and cross-examination session wherein the onus is only to ask the questions and thereby to test the knowledge of the candidate. On the contrary, the Personality Test, to a great degree, has an element of discussion and conversation in it. the process starts with a question being asked by a Board member and during the course of the answer, many times it leads to a proper discussion on the topic.
  • An unstructured interview: There are three types of interviews: a structured interview, a semi-structured interview, and an unstructured interview. The Personality Test falls in the last category, wherein there is no pre-planned or pre-designed format of the interview. The board members are free to ask any type, any number and any nature of questions to the candidate and they can switch over from one domain to another domain; from one difficulty level to another at their own will.
  • Dynamic in nature: it is full of crests and troughs like a wave. Very often during the Personality Test the candidate gets an impression, rightly or wrongly, that he has been able to project a good image and that the board is satisfied with him. During the course of the same interview, at a later stage, and all together different scenario an arise where he feels to be in a deep trouble and having lost the confidence of the board. It all depends upon the kind of answers, the kind of language, the kind of body language being used by the candidate. In other words, on should not feel too complacent when the things are going in the right direction; and simultaneously should not feel very nervous and dejected when some questions couldn’t be answered properly.
  • Test of various quotients: Remember, the Personality Test is not the test of your IQ only. It is also the test of your Emotional Quotient, Social Quotient, Spiritual Quotient, Understanding Quotient, Passion Quotient, Courage Quotient, Communication Quotient, Compassion Quotient etc. hence in your answers you should make a conscious effort to impress upon the Board that not only at the IQ, you can also fare very well on these quotients as well.
  • The Personality Test is like the one day cricket. As in one day cricket match, the scoring starts at a very brisk pace, slows down a little in the middle overs and then in the last it again picks up pace; something similar is applicable to the Personality Test as well. The first thing here I’m trying to impress is that like the cricket match your scoring performance will not be same at all the time during the interview. Secondly, if you have started on a very positive note and somewhere in the middle you have committed certain mistakes and errors, by giving last few answers very positively and correctly; to a great extent you can make mitigate the effect of the errors and can again bounce back. Also, like in the game of cricket where every batsman has his own different unique style, every bowler has his own different unique action; in the Personality Test also there cannot be one single formula of success. You should be totally aware of your strengths and weaknesses and should plan your strategy accordingly.
