The International Day of African Child was created by the organization of African Unity in the year 1991 and since then this day is being celebrated every year. This day was made to honor people who participated in Sovan on June 16, 1976. In 1976, about ten thousand black school children in Soweto of South Africa marched more than half a mile in a column. They marched in a column opposing the poor quality of education provided in their country.

The children also demanded the right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of students were shot in this protest and hundreds more killed in the next two weeks in protest. Thousands of students were injured in protests. Photos of the scene were released around the world and many people blamed the killing of young students who protested. This day was mainly created to remember this incident every year. On this day, governments, non-governmental organizations, stakeholders and other international organizations together discuss challenges and opportunities with African child rights in their minds.
