Choice of a Profession

The choice of profession is the most important part of education. If you do not choose your profession while still at school and college, you have only wasted the precious years of your life. After leaving your educational institution, you just become a rolling stone, drifting from pillar to post in search of a job, which is quite often not to your taste. You have to do any unpleasant work to earn a living and support your family. One's tastes, traits, temper and temperament have to be carefully considered while choosing one's profession. A person who is quite daring and adventurous should choose a career in the defence services. On the other hand, a person of literary taste and quiet contemplation should become a writer, a journalist or a teacher. A person who wants to serve the nation in a public position should join the civil services. One who wants to get rich quickly will find his paradise in business, commerce and industry. A person with keen intellect should choose law as a career.

One who is good at figures and in mathematics will become a good accountant, excellent cashier and a successful banker. Accountancy now-a-days is a paying profession and chartered accountants are very much in demand. The taste must be developed and stimulated in proper direction, otherwise it all love's labour lost. After all, it is not money alone that matters in life you must love and enjoy what you have to 'do to earn your living. If you do not enjoy your work, you are a mercenary and not a professional. A professional Man enjoys the work he does. A mercenary undertake some work merely to make money. Profession must agree with one's natural bent of mood and mind. One who is interested in teaching cannot become a good soldier. Nor a bully become a good teacher. Those who determine careers for the youth should keep in mind their natural traits of character. Profession is like a river that flows in its proper channel. Your character is like that channel. You must earn your livelihood through activities for which you are made and qualified. When my daugher was only three years old, I used to ask her, "Rosie, what will you become?" She used to reply, "I will be a judge and punish the thieves." I was not surprised when she took up law after graduation, though she did not remember what she used to tell me at the age of three. Because of her early tastes, she should become a judge or a successful lawyer. She is eminently fitted for judicial service. This is a profession of her own choice, not one imposed on her, because we never advised her to take up law. In fact nobody in our family ever took law, but my father had great legal inclinations and no doubt she inherited the character from her grandfather.

Both mental and physical capabilities form an important factor in the determination of one's career. R.L. Stevenson became a great writer because he was sickly and invalid and was unfit for any rigorous and vigorous profession. Authorship suited him best and in that he made his mark.

Often it is difficult for a young person to analyse his character and determine his own career. Therefore, the elders, the parents and the teachers, should help in the determination of his career. A youth lacks experience and his likes and dislikes may be whimsical. Therefore, he must consult others to make up his mind but the final decision must rest up on him. He must be fully responsibile for the profession he chooses. He should not blame others if anything goes wrong later in his life or if he feels unhappy.

Keep your life simple and follow the highest ambitions in the service of humanity while determining your career. "Simple living and high thinking." said Wordsworth. "is the highest virtue."
