The fort of Vijaydurg is one of the popular sea forts in Maharashtra. This impregnable fort is located in Deogarh Taluka of Sindhudurg district of Western Maharashtra. Vijaydurg fort is surrounded by sea on three sides. This was a stronghold of Shivaji Maharaj's Maratha Navy. The fort of Vizydurg was a symbol of the power of Maratha Navy in Portuguese documents.

Vijayadurg fort is also known as Vijay Fort. In the 17th century, Shivaji Maharaj strengthened the fort by adding magnificent facilities including the walls of the fort, many towers and the triple line of huge internal buildings.

When the fort was in Adil Shah's possession, his name was "Ghahariya". In 1653, King Shivaji Maharaj of Maratha Empire won this fort with Adil Shah and named it "Vijay Durg". Then the fort was spread over 5 acres of area and surrounded by sea all four sides.

After capturing the fort, Shivaji Maharaj expanded the fort on 17 acres of land. There was a gap in front of the entrance so that ordinary people could not enter the fort. Still British, Portuguese and Dutch attacks continued. However, till 1756 the fort remained under the rule of the Marathas.

But in 1756 the fort was lost, when British and Peshwa jointly attacked the fort.

This fort of Vijaydurga is the strongest fort in India, which is in the middle of the sea. This is the oldest fort of Sindhudurg district, it was very difficult to capture the fort due to the Gulf of 40 km, which used to work as a natural obstacle for the ships and used to protect the fort. Maratha warships were anchored in this creek. So that the enemy could not see them from the deep sea.

The fort is located near the Wagotan river, which serves as the boundary for the district of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

This fort is a great example of strong ancient architecture. King Bhoj of the fort Shilahar Dynasty was built. The fort was constructed between 1193 and 1205.

Cave: Some cave structures are present inside the Vijaydurg fort, the fort has been covered by sea for 3 years and offers great views of the Arabian sea.

Eschenn Tunnel: During the Emergency there was also a 200 meter tunnel. Another end of this tunnel was in the house of Dhalap's palace in the village.

Lake: There is also a large lake, which was the main source of fresh water for people living on the fort.

Cannon Balls: Some old cannon balls are also placed inside the fort. Even today, you can see the flooded spots on the fort walls on the walls of the fort.

Walls: This Fort is a huge fort with walls of three and it has 27 bastions. The area of ​​the fort is approximately 17 acres; It takes about 3 hours to see all the things. Walls are made of large black rocks (Lertites). The walls of the fort are about 8 to 10 meters high.

How to reach Vijaydurg

By Road: ST buses routinely travel to Vijaydurg from important cities of Maharashtra It can easily reach Vijaydurg from Mumbai-Goa National Highway. It is approximately 440 km from Mumbai, 180 km from Panaji and 60 kilometers from Kasarde.

By railway route: Rajapur Road (63 km away) is the nearest railway station to reach Vijaydurg Fort. There is an alternative railway station for Kankavali Fort. It is located on the Konkan Railway route and is 80 km away from the fort.

In almost all trains going to Rajapur and Kankanavalli, it easily stops at these two stations. You can easily take a private vehicle fort from the station.

By Air: Ratnagiri Airport is the nearest airport to reach the fort. However, there are fewer flights to this, so Kolhapur Airport is 150 km and Dabolim Airport 210 km is to reach alternative economical airport.

Best time to travel

It is a good time to visit this fort from October to February because the weather remains cold and pleasant in these months.
