The 17th Century Aguada ("Agawada") Fort and Lighthouse are the perfect symbols of Portuguese architecture, which is located in Ganki's Sincrim Beach, Goa. Built in 1612 for protection from the Dutch and Marathas, the fort Aguada is the most valuable and important fort for Portuguese.

Aguada ("Agawada") Fort is the best preserved Portuguese fort in India. Its construction was started in 1609 and was completed in 1612 by the then Viceroy Ru Tawra.

Seeing the confluence of the Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea, the fort completed many objectives for the Portuguese army. Currently, the beauty, the green scenery, and historical importance attract tourists from all over the world.

It has been made so firmly that it has never fallen into the hands of enemies. This fort is the touch of patriotism.

Fort Aguada will never fail you to immerse yourself in the rich history of Goa. Every corner of it tells the story of Goa's past. There is a Portuguese word 'agua' for 'water'.

Split into two halves, the lower part of the fort served as a safe berth for Portuguese ships. The upper part is a shocking four-storey Portuguese lighthouse built in 1612, which has the capacity to keep more than 2,400,000 gallons of water, which is one of Asia's largest freshwater reservoirs.

Apart from the Lighthouse, in the case of war and emergency it also has a ditch, gunpowder room and secret passage of escape.

Architecture of Fort Aguada

This is a great example of Portuguese architecture made of the latest Stone, which is widely available in Goa, Aguada ("Agavada") Fort stood in the time of destruction.

Sprinkled against water and strong winds, it is also strong after 400 years. The magnificent fort is built on the Barde Peninsula and it covers the entire peninsula. There is a large town in which more than 2,000,000 gallons of water can be stored.

The walls constructed are 5 feet high and 1.3 meters. The square of the shape of a thick, natural terrain is surrounded by fortresses on three sides.

Aguada ("Lighthouse") Prison and Lighthouse

A part of Fort Aguad has been converted to jail during the Salazar administration. This biggest prison in Goa is closed for public viewing and it has a statue that shows the fight for Goa's independence.

Every year on 18th June a function is organized to salute freedom fighters of Goa.

Aguada ("Agawada") is a magnificent four-story light house in the fort. Built in 1864, it is Asia's oldest lighthouse. Initially, light was released once every 7 minutes from the lighthouse. Which later changed to 30 seconds.

The Lighthouse was closed to the public a few years ago and therefore, a new lighthouse was built in 1976. A ladder takes you to the top, from which you can see the beautiful view of the sunset.
