In India, the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is celebrated every year on October 1 for sharing the need and significance of blood in a person's life. This was first observed in the year 1975 by the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohmatology on October 1. The Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohmatology was established on October 22, 1971 by Dr. J.G. Jowley and Mrs. Kee. Formation was led by Crissen.

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day will be observed on Monday, October 1, 2018.

Purpose of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day

  • To achieve the goal of voluntary blood donation successfully to meet the immediate needs of the needy patients.
  • To keep blood collection in blood bank for any urgent and serious requirement.

  • Inspire and encourage people to give blood to those who are not interested in blood donation even after being healthy.
  • Encourage those people to voluntarily donate blood which donate blood to their friends and relatives only.

Donation of blood donation or its components to the needy has become a very important part of humanity in the modern health care system. It does not matter who is going to get blood donor and blood, in the future it is also possible that the donor becomes blood donor and become a healthy blood donor in the future. Therefore donating blood without any desire is a great and important part of humanity in the process of saving life. Not only should blood donation to our friends and relatives, but voluntary blood donation is the real humanity for any human being, because it can save many lives.

To protect against diseases through blood transfusion during blood transfusion, carefully examining each unit of blood collected (through advanced testing techniques such as: nucleic acid test), life can lead to horrible diseases such as AIDS, Syphilis, Hepatitis B , Hepatitis-C, Malaria and many other diseases. Voluntary blood donors should be encouraged for blood donation because the blood of the voluntary blood donor is safe, rather than those who donate to the professional or paycheck. Voluntary blood donors never lie and agree with their blood's advanced technique because they want to save someone's precious life in the right way.

On the occasion of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, various awareness programs, camps and supplementary publicity activities are organized to make people aware about blood donation in all the states. According to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 there are various criteria for blood donors. Blood donor should be between 18-60, weight 45 or more, pulse rate range from 60 to 100 / minute, BP Normal, Hb 12.5gm / 100ml and body temperature should not exceed 37.5 degree centigrade.

Blood is a very important element in human life because it provides vital nutrition for body tissues and organs. National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is celebrated to bring great change in the society, to follow life-saving measures and to get out of serious illness due to the violence and injury, complications related to childbirth, road traffic accidents, and many unforeseen circumstances.

Safe blood donation every year saves the life of people of all ages and all levels. In the form of voluntary blood donors Tripura, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra states are considered nationally. Tripura as a voluntary blood donor in India, a north eastern state of the country, is considered at the highest level with 93%, as well as Manipur is considered to be at the lowest level in the country.

To overcome the ignorance, fear and misconceptions of the general public towards voluntary blood donation campaign, it is very important to celebrate this day at a great level. Voluntary organizations are paying their precious time and utilizing their resources to encourage students of the country / youth, colleges, institutions, clubs or NGOs etc.
