World Tsunami Awareness Day: 5 November

In 2015, the UN General Assembly nominated November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day. This day has been started to spread general awareness about tsunami among people all over the world. On December 5, 2016, the first World Tsunami Awareness Day was celebrated, in which events of AMCDRR (Asian Minister Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction) were organized in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Champions. In order to reduce the risk of disaster, a conference (3-5 November 2016) was organized by the Indian government in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, in collaboration with the United Nations Office.

Although tsunami is unusual, it can affect many people, especially those living in the coastal areas. In the year 2004, a tsunami arose due to earthquake in the Indian Ocean, which affected nearly five lakh people in nearly 15 countries. Tsunami is a global problem and thus international cooperation is extremely important for better information and recognition of adopting measures to reduce risk. This year, World Tsunami Awareness Day is also associated with International Day for Disaster Reduction and "Sendai Seven Campaign". In the year 2017, the World Tsunami Awareness Day will focus on Target B's goal of Seven Campaign for Disaster Risk Reduction. The mission of the campaign is to reduce the number of people affected by disasters worldwide.

World Tsunami Awareness Day will be celebrated all over the world on Monday, November 5, 2018.

History of World Tsunami Awareness Day

The name of the word "tsunami" is made up of Japanese "tsu". It means the harbor and "nami" means wave. Tsunami is a series of large waves formed by unrest caused by water. These waves are generally related to earthquakes which are nearby or around the ocean.

Although Tsunami is an exceptionally unusual type of natural disaster, it causes destruction in many countries around the world. Tsunami is a serious threat to the world and it can also disrupt the progress of development. In March 2015, the World Wide Debate Risk Reduction was organized in the United Nations to reduce the risk of disaster, the Sendai Framework was adopted. The 2030 agenda for sustainable development was also proposed in the conference organized in Sendi. It dedicated a special day to Japan and other countries as "World Tsunami Awareness Day" and it was nominated by the UN.

On November 5, in honor of the famous Japanese story of "Inamurura-no-hi", it was selected as World Tsunami Awareness Day which means "to burn the herds of rice". During an earthquake in 1854, a farmer noticed that the tide is decreasing, which is an indication of the coming tsunami. In order to warn the villagers, they planted their entire crop in the fire. As a result the villagers immediately evacuated the village and all went towards the higher land. Later that farmer constructed an embankment of plants in the form of an obstacle against future tides.

What is tsunami

Tsunamis are large waves which occur on the shores of the sea, which are mainly associated with landslides or earthquakes. Like many other natural calamities, it is difficult to predict the tsunami, but it can be suggested that the risk is high in seismic active areas.

Due to Tsunami

Tsunami waves are highly dangerous and usually look like strong walls of water. Strong waves attack on the beach for hours, thereby destroying thousands of lives. There are several reasons for the tsunami such as submarine landslides, earthquakes, coastal stone breakdown, volcanic eruptions or separatist conflicts.

What action should be taken

It is important to recognize the symptoms of the tsunami's natural warning to take advantage of immune measures. Since tsunami can be caused due to the strong earthquake, you should understand the serious shaking that you feel on earth. Tsunami may also be born due to rapid decline in sea level. If you see tremendous bumps in water or if you feel trembling in water, then understand that this is Tsunami. Tsunami makes a thunder "roaring" sound like an airplane or train. If you look at any of these symptoms, do not delay the order of leaving the place and leave the coastal areas immediately. It is advisable to leave that place immediately after getting the signal of Tsunami.

Why World Tsunami Awareness Day is celebrated

World Tsunami Awareness Day is celebrated to create awareness among the people about the measures related to Tsunami related risks and tsunami approaches. Since the natural disaster does not know its limitations, the United Nations suggested the World Tsunami Awareness Day on 5th November and appealed for global cooperation in increasing prevention efforts and public awareness. Although tsunamis are rare, but many of their lives can be wasted due to its destructive effect. The devastating tsunami of the years of 2004 and 2011 has proved that how dangerous these natural disasters can be. Along with this, it has been seen that most people are unaware of the Tsunami signals and do not know the preventive action done during the storms caused by the tsunami.

World Tsunami Awareness Day helps to improve our knowledge and awareness about the tsunami, and also shows how we should react if we are stranded in any situation. On the Tsunami day, many conferences, debates, seminars, quiz etc. are organized at national and international levels to make people aware of its risk.

In the event of a tsunami coming, the national government should take action to guide people timely and appropriately. Initial warning signs can save many lives. They should be transported to safer places and they should be supplied with essential items such as food, water, clothes, etc.

Although large buildings and mechanical and scientific instruments can warn the tsunami, such devices can not save people completely from the tsunami. During the tsunami of 2011, several exit centers in the Japanese city of Minimissenricu were built 20 meters above sea level, which meant the disaster was to be stopped. These centers were badly affected by the salab, which was affected by the large population. In this way, international committees have to be more careful and find better preventive methods.

How World Tsunami Awareness Day celebrated

In December 2015 the United Nations General Assembly nominated November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day. To celebrate this day every year, the United Nations Assembly appealed to all countries, civil societies and international committees. This day is celebrated to share the inventive approach to increase awareness and reduce its risk of Tsunami.

World Tsunami Awareness Day focuses on the practice of educating and evacuation. Every year on 5th November this day is celebrated with the aim of protecting the lives of all the people around the world. World Tsunami Awareness Day produces awareness about the precautionary measures against the tsunami. To save the precious life of people, good behavior and general knowledge shown in the story of "Inamura-no-hi" should be applied by everyone.

World Tsunami Awareness Day is used as a platform for making people aware of the symptoms of tsunami. It is important to map the oceans' seas to recognize the cause of Tsunami. With the possibility of landslides, it is important to make international efforts to map the oceans in search of dangerous seismic zones and areas. It is important that the government of United Nations member states unite and share cooperation to identify the oceans. This will help in educating the people about better preventative measures in the state of Tsunami. World Tsunami Awareness Day creates awareness amongst all, especially in the population living in coastal areas. When they experience Tsunami, they should run away rather than wait for official warnings.

Prevention and education include teaching to respond to people as soon as possible. People should know the best places to rescue. It should be from the seashore and at the height. Indicator panels should be fixed on the seashore of all seasons to guide people about safe areas during the tsunami.

World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR)

According to the World Conference on World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR), the most acceptable method to stop people from the risk of tsunami is to distribute and share the necessary information immediately through "initial warnings". Prevention is also important at the individual level. People should be careful while traveling in the danger zone and they should recognize how to respond. At the community or social level, we must warn people who are traveling through dangerous coastal areas or engage in activities like taking photographs or selfies. Sendai Framework has incorporated new fundamentals including investment in "Build Back Batter" and DRR. The Sendai Framework also shows that the use of indigenous, traditional and local awareness and practices is equally important. Japan and the United Nations believe that by spreading this kind of awareness through the World Tsunami Awareness Day, there will be a significant reduction in the number of tsunami-affected victims.

World Tsunami Awareness Day Theme

  • Theme of World Tsunami Awareness Day 2016: "Effective Education and Exile Study"
  • Theme of the World Tsunami Awareness Day 2017: "Reduce the Number of Affected People".

Conclusion

The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused the United Nations to implement tsunami warnings and systems globally. Under the sea pressure sensor, real-time data and offshore GPS tsunami warning centers are helping to warn or cancel the warning more quickly and accurately. Real-time monitoring of sea level and earthquake is crucial for confirming the incident of a devastating tsunami for the remote Tsunami. In such cases, urgent warnings should be issued to the public. There is not enough time to release warning signs for the local Tsunami. In such situations people should work wisely and should respond promptly.

Although tsunamis are unusual phenomena, they are very fatal. In the last 100 years, about 58 tsunamis have destroyed about 2.60,000 people, which is approximately 4,600 / disaster. It is more than all other natural disasters. In December 2004 there was a maximum death in the Indian Ocean Tsunami. There are approximately 277,000 deaths in 14 countries, including India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand alone.
