All India Handicrafts Week: 8-14 December

All India Handicrafts Week is celebrated from 8 December to 14 December throughout India. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm to increase the awareness, cooperation and its importance in the society about handicrafts among the people of all the states of the country. In Imphal, a large ecology craft exhibition is organized in the public library, BT road campus.

This whole week's ceremony is a special time for all craftsmen of the whole country because they have a great opportunity to highlight their great works all over the world. This weekend, this exhibition offers great hopes and opportunities for millions of dedicated handicrafts craftsmen from all over the country. This is a great program which is helping to keep the tradition and culture of the years of handicrafts alive.

The whole week's ceremony consists of five major components such as: Buyer-seller meeting, Handicrafts exhibition, artistic performance by Indian artists, live performance by national award winning craftsmen and exhibition of Indian food.

All India Handicrafts Week is celebrated from Saturday (December 8th) in 2018 till Friday (December 14).

How is the All India Handicrafts Week celebrated?

Along with the week of All India Handicrafts Development Commissioner's offices, the Ministry of Textiles is celebrated to increase awareness and to distribute the main information of handicrafts week plans among handicrafts craftsmen. During the week-long celebrations, local marketing workshop is organized in Bangalore and Mangalore along with handicrafts development at state level respectively.

In the celebration of this program, a range of about 50 artists, NGOs, various craft experts are invited to increase the interaction between them and government agencies. The ceremony of the whole week is organized for the development of handicrafts and for analyzing all the barriers and boundaries coming in the way of searching remedial measures. To help craft participants, experts are invited to discuss their experiences, ideas and solve problems.

During the program of "All India Handicrafts Week", the late Smt Kamladevi Chattopadhyaya is paid tribute by the people. He is a great social reformer, freedom fighter, a follower of Gandhi and famous for his dedicated participation in the Indian independence movement. They are famous for reviving the Indian handlooms, with the help of handicrafts as well as the socio-economic standard of Indian women through the cooperative movement after the country's independence.

To increase the awareness among people about handicrafts, by distributing craft maps, catalogs, diverse sheets etc. by various organizations are distributed to the general public. During the ceremony, the art of handicrafts, folk painting, tearing painting, hand block printing Works are performed in front of the people.

Why do we celebrate it ?, and the purpose of celebrating All India Handicrafts Week:

  • The program on fashion accessories is organized by the Ministry of Textile Ministry and Handicrafts Development Commissioner to promote Indian handicrafts, increase awareness and improve brand image.
  • The publication of book (Treasury of Handicrafts Group from India) indicates how handicrafts are developed through group development program?
  • It is celebrated for the development and welfare of handicrafts craftsmen from different states of India.
  • A talent upgrade-cum-design training in Bamboo Craft was also organized to enhance the capacity of the people.
  • A design workshop on Indian handicrafts is also organized for the children to raise awareness among the children in awareness camps (for the Rajiv Gandhi Health Scheme on craft groups) and to increase this capacity among the children.
  • Drawing and essay competition related to handicrafts subjects for displaying messages on Indian handicrafts are organized throughout India.
  • A free medical camp is also organized for the benefit of handicrafts craftsmen.

All india handicrafts board

The All India Handicrafts Board was first established in 1952 as a government adviser to tackle problems related to handicrafts in India as well as to implement and improve the measures for the development of handicrafts. It was formed under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Textiles. The Board also had to know all aspects of handicrafts for effective implementation of all the schemes like: Technical, financial and artistic marketing etc.

The All India Handicrafts Board provides another help and new ideas to the State Governments to implement handicraft development schemes. The board is made up of many handicrafts and handloom organizations. The board is fully responsible for the arrangement of exhibition of handicrafts, to promote the development and export of handicrafts market.
