Speech on Lymphatic Filariasis
It is a communicable disease that spreads through mosquito bites and is present in acute and chronic forms which mainly affects the lymphatic system. This disease is not fatal, but the cause of great pain, deformity and disability.
Lymphatic filariasis is a pest related disease, which is caused by some nematodes of the family Folerida, and is a major public health problem in India. It is found in almost all the states of India.
causative agent:
Lymph filariasis is caused by two organisms:
(i) Wuchcheria (filariasis) Bancrofti, and
(ii) Brugia Chami
Of these two organisms, W. Bancrofti is more common in generating infection. They are long threads, such as tape worms with taping ends and are easily visible with naked eyes. Adult male worms measure about 2.5 cm x 1.0 mm while female worms measure approximately 8 to 10 cm x 0.3 mm in length.
Man is a definite host with adult insects in the lymphatic system and the culex mosquito is an intermediate host in which the embryo (microfilaria) passes through further development, after which they become contagious to humans.
Method of dissemination:
This transmissible female is spread by the bite of the culex mosquito. The cuex mosquito sucks the blood of the infected person during the night and transmits the disease.
Transitions during hot and humid climate are more common, which is conducive to the reproduction and development of mosquitoes.
Incubation period:
Incubation period is 6-18 months (average 9 months).
Signs and symptoms:
Diagnostic symptoms are due to the fever, lymph nodes, lymph adenitis, the scrotum elephants, obstruction of the lymph vessels, The lower extremities are more affected than the rest.
Although this disease is not fatal, but it is especially due to inflammation of the feet and external genitalia causing great pain, deformity and disability, a condition called elfantiasis.
Prevention and control:
Remedies for mosquito bites and anti-mosquito measures should be discussed for prevention and control of lymphatic filarias.
Treatment:
Diethylcarbamazin (DEC) is a medicine of choice for the treatment of filariasis. It is available in the market in the name of the tablet as hetrasan. Due to its side effects it is not used extensively.
