Marble Palace Kolkata History

Marble Palace is a lenient mansion of nineteenth century in north Kolkata. It is one of the best-preserved and most beautiful houses of nineteenth century Calcutta. The mansion is famous for its marble walls, floors and statues, from where its name came out.

This mansion was built in 1835 with the passion of a rich Bengali business king Rajendra Malik.

Raja Rajendra Mulik was the adoptive son of Nicolomoni Malik, who had built the Jagannath temple which was before the Marble Palace, and this temple is now standing inside the Marble Palace complex, but it is only available to family members.

Haveli style is neoclassic, while its open courtyard plan is largely traditional Bengali. Near the courtyard, there is a place of worship for family members. The complex also includes lawn, a rock garden, a lake and a small zoo.

The marble palace has many western sculptures, pieces of Victorian furniture, paintings of European and Indian artists, and other artwork. Decorative objects include large chandeliers, clocks, and ceiling mirrors.

It is said that the two paintings of Peter Paul Rubens, St. Catherine's marriage and martyr of St. Sebastian were included in the mansion. It is said that two pictures were included by Sir Jorge Reynolds, infant Hercules Strangling the Nag and Venus and Cupid.

It now primarily acts as an aviary, which includes peacocks, hornbills, pelicans, storks and cranes. Many species of monkeys and deer are included.
