Aga Khan Palace Pune History

The Aga Khan Palace was built by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III in Pune, India. It was built in 1892 and it is one of the giant buildings of Indian history.

Aga Khan Palace is a majestic building and one of India's greatest wonders. This palace was built by Sultan for charity, where poor people living in Pune and surrounding areas were helped.

Historically, this palace is very important. During the Quit India Movement Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai were kept in the palace from 9th August, 1942 to 6 May 1944. During the period of captivity Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai had died.

We also see his samadhi near the palace. Memorial signs of Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi also appear in the river near the palace complex.

In Aga Khan Palace in 1969, Aga Khan IV donated Gandhiji and his views to the Indian people. At present, this palace is also known as a Gandhi memorial, where his orphanage is also kept.

In 1974 India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also came to visit the palace and promised to pay Rs. 200,000 every year to take care of the palace.

This has increased to 1 million by the year 1990. After this, India's national heritage was ignored for a few years due to the lack of money. Then, when the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi was opposed to the Pune station in 1999, there was some improvement in the situation of this national heritage.

In 2003, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) declared this place as the National Heritage Heritage.

Organized activities related to the Palace:

The Gandhi Memorial Society organizes the following programs every year:

  • Republic Day - 26th January
  • Martyrdom Day - 30th January
  • Mahashivaratri - Kasturba Gandhi died on the occasion of Mother's Day
  • Independence Day - August 15
  • Mahatma Gandhi Birth Anniversary - October 2

Along with it, daily morning prayer here is organized for Samadhi. Every day many people participate in this prayer, and on October 2, thousands of people come to see this palace.
