Bekkal Fort is the largest and best preserved fort located in Bekal village of Kasaragod district of Kerala.
It is believed that the Bekkal Fort has been in existence since the beginning of the rule of Chirakkal kings. Many people believe that the fort of Bekal was built by Shivappa Nayak of Badanoor, ruler of the state of Karnataka.
However, some people believe that the fortifications Bukkal and Chandragiri (another fort near Kasaragod) belonged to Chirakkal kings and Shivappa Nayak rebuilt them after occupying the area in the 1650s or 1660s.
The Kolathiri king and the hero, struggled for the occupation of the Bekk Fort. But later Haider Ali came to power in Mysore (Karnataka region). They conquered large areas which included the Bekkal Fort.
Bekkal Fort was very important for Tipu Sultan, the son of Hyder Ali, who was in the form of his military operations in Malabar.
There are lots of archaeological evidence supporting the presence of the Mysore Sultans at Bekkal Fort. However, Tipu died in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 and thus Bakkal Fort came under the occupation of the East India Company.
Later, the Bekkal Fort was also instrumental in the military enterprises and administrative functions of the British Raj. When the boundaries of the district were rebuilt, the town of Bakkal became the headquarters of Bankal Taluka.
Later it became Kasargod taluka. Later, when the Indian government reconstituted the states in 1956, Kasaragod district became a part of the new state of Kerala.
The present-day Bekkal Fort is an important tourist attraction today. Bekkal Fort Tourism Development Corporation is now trying to make this place an international tourist center.
Meanwhile, Bekkal's golden sands, emeralds are flooded, and the beautiful hills have made it a perennial favorite of filmmakers.

Railway travel: Kasaragod, approx 16 km, is the nearest railway station.
Air Travel: Mangalore, about 50 km away from Kasargod, is the nearest airport.
